The Story
Born in 1903, Vasan was a journalist who took over the Ananda Vikatan, the great Tamil magazine, and made it the most influential publication of the language. He then entered the cinema, founding Gemini Studios, which became one of the greatest film studios of India.
His Chandralekha (1948) was the first great epic of Indian cinema — a film of astonishing scale whose drum-beat finale became world-famous. Under his hand Gemini Studios produced a series of the greatest films of the age, and his vision of the grand, popular cinema shaped the Tamil screen.
He died in 1969, honoured as one of the founders of the Indian film industry. His studio, his films, and his magazine made him one of the most powerful and influential figures of the culture of the South.
