The Story
Born in 1898 in Dharwad, Panchakshari Gavai grew up in one of the great musical centres of the South, and his voice was recognised as extraordinary from his youth. He trained in the Hindustani tradition, mastering the khayal and the great ragas with a depth that few of his contemporaries could match.
His concerts, in the major cities of the South and across the country, were events of the highest order — his singing of the great ragas moved audiences to a state of absorption that was almost devotional. He was among the singers who carried the Hindustani tradition of the Dharwad region to national fame.
He was also a devoted teacher, training a generation of musicians in the tradition. He died in 1953, honoured as one of the greatest voices of the age — a singer whose art was a form of worship.
