The Story
Born in 1926 in Loutolim, Goa, Mario Miranda studied art in Bombay and began his career as a cartoonist with the Times of India, where his daily cartoons made him famous across the country. His style — detailed, comic, and full of the life of the street — was instantly recognisable and universally loved.
His work appeared in publications across the world, from the newspapers of Bhārat to the great magazines of Europe, and his drawings of the people, the markets, and the everyday scenes of the land became a treasured record of its life. He drew with affection, and the world laughed with him, not at his subjects.
He was honoured with the Padma Shri and the Padma Vibhushan and with exhibitions in the great cities of the world. He died in 2011, and his name remains the greatest in the cartoon art of Bhārat — the artist who drew the laughter of the world.
