The Story
Chitradurga, the 'fort of the many rocks', was one of the great strongholds of the Karnataka country, ruled by the Nayaka line of chieftains. Madakari Nayaka, born in 1742, inherited a kingdom of forts and hills and a tradition of independence that the rising power of Mysore was determined to crush.
Hyder Ali, the ruler of Mysore, demanded the submission of Chitradurga; Madakari refused, and for years the two powers fought — the hill fort defying the armies of Mysore with a courage that became legend. The people of the region remember him as a just and valiant king who protected his people and his faith against the invader.
In 1779, betrayed from within, the fort fell to Hyder Ali, and Madakari Nayaka was captured and imprisoned. He died in captivity, but the memory of his defiance lived on: the Bharata Bharati series tells his story as one of the great resisters of the South — a king of the people who would not bow.
