The Story
Born in 1725 in the village of Chondi, Ahilyabai was married into the Holkar family of the Maratha empire. When her father-in-law Malhar Rao Holkar recognised her extraordinary ability, he trained her in the arts of government — and after the deaths of her husband and son, she took the throne of Indore in 1767.
She ruled for thirty years with a rare combination of firmness and compassion. She moved her capital to Maheshwar on the Narmada, administered justice without fear or favour, encouraged trade and agriculture, and built roads and wells and dharmashalas across her state. Her rule was so just that her subjects called her the mother of the land.
She was also one of the great builders of Bhārat: she repaired and built temples from Kashi to Rameswaram, including the renovation of the Kashi Vishwanath temple, and her works still stand across the land. She died in 1795, leaving a state prosperous and a name that has never faded from the memory of Bhārat.
