The Story
Unveiled in 2018, the Statue of Unity honours Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — the 'Iron Man of Bhārat' — whose greatest achievement was persuading 562 princely states to join the Union after Independence, creating a single nation from a patchwork of kingdoms.
At 182 metres, it is nearly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty and the tallest statue on Earth. Built of steel and concrete with a bronze cladding, it stands on an island in the Narmada river, and a glass viewing gallery at its chest offers sweeping views of the Sardar Sarovar Dam and the surrounding valley.
The statue faces the Narmada Dam — fitting, since Patel was also the visionary behind the river-linking and dam projects that would irrigate his home state of Gujarat. Around its base, a museum and exhibition hall tell the story of Patel and the unification of Bhārat, making the monument both a wonder and a history lesson.
