The Story
On 26 January 1950, the Constitution drafted under Dr. B.R. Ambedkar came into force, replacing British-era laws and declaring Bhārat a sovereign, democratic republic. The date was no accident: it was chosen because 26 January 1930 was the day the Congress had first declared Purna Swaraj — complete independence.
The Constitution is the longest written constitution of any nation, and its Preamble begins 'We, the people of Bhārat' — a promise that power belongs to the people. Its 395 articles (as first written) guarantee rights, duties, and the democratic machinery of the world's largest republic.
Every 26 January, Delhi hosts the Republic Day parade down Kartavya Path: the President unfurls the flag, regiments march, tanks roll past, schoolchildren dance, and tableaux from every state roll by. The celebrations end with the Beating Retreat ceremony, and the sky above Bhārat fills with the tricolour.
