The Story
Born in 1882 in Solapur, Walchand Hirachand was a contractor who rose to become one of the most daring industrialists of the age. In 1916 he founded the Scindia Steam Navigation Company, breaking the British monopoly on coastal shipping — a patriotic act as much as a business one, for the company flew the flag of Bhārat on the seas.
His vision was boundless: he built the Hindustan Shipyard — the nation's first — the Hindustan Aircraft factory at Bangalore, and the Premier Automobiles company, determined that the new nation must build its own ships, planes, and cars. His industries gave employment to tens of thousands and laid the foundations of Indian manufacturing.
He died in 1953, honoured as one of the great builders of modern Bhārat. His shipyard built the navy's ships, his aircraft factory became the great Hindustan Aeronautics, and his name remains a monument to the industrial patriotism of the freedom era.
