The Story
Born in Maharashtra in 1881, Umakant Keshav Apte grew up in the atmosphere of Maharashtra's revolutionary nationalism, shaped by the memory of Shivaji and the writings of the age. He became a close associate of Savarkar and helped found Abhinav Bharat, the secret society dedicated to armed revolution against the British.
The society spread its nets across Maharashtra, training young men and preparing risings. When the British struck at the revolutionary movement, Apte was hunted relentlessly — and in 1915, cornered by the police, he chose death over capture, falling in the fight that ended his short, blazing life.
His death at thirty-four made him a martyr of the armed struggle — one of the many young men of Maharashtra who gave their lives in the years before Gandhi's mass movement. The revolutionary tradition he helped found became one of the streams that fed the freedom of Bhārat.
