The Story
The traditions of the Karnataka hills remember Thimmappa Nayaka as a chieftain of the shepherd community — a man of the forests and the hills who refused to bow to the tax-collectors and officials of the dominant power of the age. His defiance made him the champion of the poor hill folk.
His resistance grew into open revolt: Thimmappa Nayaka and his followers harried the forces sent against them, using the hills and forests that were their home as their fortress. For a time, the power of the region could not crush the shepherd-chief and his little army of the hills.
Eventually overwhelmed by superior forces, Thimmappa Nayaka was captured and put to death — but his name passed into the legends of the people. The Bharata Bharati series preserves his story as one of the many resisters of the common people of Bhārat who fought against foreign and feudal domination long before the modern freedom movement.
