The Story
Born in 1904 in Allahabad, Subhadra Kumari began writing poetry as a child and married at sixteen — but she was no ordinary householder. She joined the freedom movement with her husband, took part in the non-cooperation and civil disobedience campaigns, and was imprisoned for her patriotism.
Her poetry, written in simple, stirring Hindi, made her the voice of the nation's women. Her Jhansi ki Rani — which tells how the Rani, sword in hand and child on her back, fought the British 'like a man' — is the most famous Hindi poem of the freedom era, recited in every school of the land.
She was also a member of the Constituent Assembly, elected to represent the people in the making of the new nation. She died in 1948, in a road accident, and the whole nation mourned the poet who had given it its most beloved verse.
