The Story
Born in 1906 in Chennai, Narayan began writing in the 1930s with Swami and Friends, the story of a schoolboy in the imaginary town of Malgudi. His friend Graham Greene helped get the book published, and the world was introduced to the small town of South Bhārat that would become one of the great places of fiction.
For seven decades Narayan peopled Malgudi with a cast of unforgettable characters — the guide Raju, the financial expert Margayya, the sweet-vendor Jagan, the printer Raman — and with the small events of ordinary life that he raised to the level of art. His novels, including The Guide, The Financial Expert, and The Man-Eater of Malgudi, are read and loved across the world.
He died in 2001, honoured with the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Vibhushan, and his name is spoken among the greatest of world novelists. Malgudi — the town he created from the dust and light of Bhārat — remains his immortal gift to the world's literature.
