The Story
Born to the sage Shakti, son of Vasishta, Parashara inherited a lineage of immense spiritual authority. His birth is tied to one of the most famous curses of the epics: his father was slain by the rakshasa Kalmashapada, and the young Parashara, burning with vengeance, was about to destroy the world of the demons when the sages of the assembly calmed him with the reminder that dharma, not anger, must rule.
He composed the Parashara Smriti, one of the oldest law-books of Bhārat, teaching righteousness, conduct, and the duties of the ages. He is also the traditional author of the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the root text of Vedic astrology — the science of reading the stars that people of Bhārat still consult today.
His son, born on an island of the Yamuna, was Krishna Dvaipayana — the great Vyasa, arranger of the Vedas and author of the Mahabharata. Through Vyasa, Parashara is the grandfather of the entire Kuru dynasty and the ancestor of the epic's heroes.
