The Story
Born in 1874 in the village of Panje near Udupi, Mangesh Rao spent his early years in poverty, struggling to educate himself — a struggle he never forgot. He became a schoolteacher, and his teaching and his writing were devoted to the children and the common people of the coastal land.
His poems are full of the life of the coast — the sea, the coconut groves, the festivals and the folk songs of the land — and his children's verses are among the sweetest in Kannada. His famous poem, the Nanjanagudu Rathosava, pictures the great festival with a vividness that made it a classic.
He died in 1937, leaving a body of poetry and essays that the Kannada people cherish. He is honoured as one of the pioneers of modern Kannada poetry — the poet of the coast who wrote for the people and the children of the land.
