The Story
Born in 1853 in Balasore, Padmacharan Patnaik lived in the years when the Odia language was threatened — when the neighbouring provinces sought to swallow the Odia districts and the language itself. He became a leader of the Utkala movement, the struggle for the unity and recognition of the Odia land and language.
His poetry was the movement's soul: his Utkala Bhramara, a patriotic poem of great power, and his other verses stirred the Odia people to pride in their land and language. He wrote in every form — devotion, love, and patriotism — and his songs are sung in every corner of Odisha.
He died in 1932, before the united Odisha of his dreams was achieved in 1936 — but his verse had made it possible. He is honoured as the national poet of Odisha, the voice of the Utkala movement, and his name remains the most beloved in the modern literature of the land.
