The Story
Born in Goa when the territory was still under Portuguese rule, Nani Baladevi grew up in a land where freedom was denied and protest was punished. With only a little schooling, she understood the cause of the motherland and joined the movement for the liberation of Goa, serving the underground with total devotion.
She was arrested for her part in the struggle, and in prison the Portuguese authorities tortured her — the accounts of her life record that they stuffed her body with chilli powder — but she never revealed the secrets of the revolutionaries. Her courage under torture became the pride of the movement.
After Goa's liberation in 1961, she continued to serve the people and was honoured for her sacrifice. She died in 1997, remembered as the symbol of the self-respect and courage of the women of Bhārat — one who gave her body to pain but never her spirit to the enemy.
