The Story

Born in Delhi in 1884, Har Dayal was a brilliant student who mastered Sanskrit and philosophy and studied at Oxford. But his heart was in the freedom of Bhārat, and he gave up scholarship for revolution, moving through the centres of the Indian diaspora and preaching revolt against the British.

In 1913 he founded the Ghadar Party in San Francisco — an organisation of the Punjabi workers and peasants of America and Canada who, remembering the humiliations of the empire, swore to free Bhārat by force. The party's newspaper, Ghadar, carried the cry of revolution to every household of the diaspora, and its members began to return to Bhārat to light the rising.

The British, terrified of Har Dayal's reach, had him pursued across the world; he fled to Europe and lived in exile, always working for Bhārat. He returned to India only in 1938, a year before his death, and died in 1939 — having given the freedom movement one of its most daring international organisers.
