The Story
Born in 1918 in Mogeri, Adiga was educated in Mangaluru and Mysore and spent his life as a teacher and professor of English. In the 1940s he began to write poetry that broke with the romantic tradition — poems that confronted the modern world with its doubts, its science, and its new truths.
His work, gathered in collections like Bhavataranga and Nadedu Banda Dari, made him the leader of the Navya movement, the modernism of Kannada poetry. His verse is marked by its intellectual depth, its technical mastery, and its willingness to face the darkness and the light of the modern age.
He was honoured with the Jnanpith Award in 1974, the highest literary honour of Bhārat. He died in 1992, leaving a body of work that transformed the Kannada language — the pioneer who gave it a modern voice.
