The Story
Born in 1880 in Haveri, Halakatti was a lawyer by profession and a scholar of the Veerashaiva tradition by passion. He realised that the Vachanas — the poems of Basava, Allama Prabhu, Akka Mahadevi, and the other sharanas — were scattered in manuscripts and being lost, and he devoted his life to saving them.
For decades he travelled the villages of Karnataka, collecting the palm-leaf manuscripts of the Vachanas, editing them, and publishing them with scholarly care. His editions of the Vachana literature — the words of the sharanas that had lain forgotten — made the treasure available to the whole world.
He died in 1964, honoured as the saviour of the Vachana literature. Without his work, thousands of the poems of the sharanas would have been lost, and the study of the movement of Basava would have been impossible. His name is remembered with gratitude by every student of the tradition.
