The Story
Born in the forest hermitage of Kanva, Bharata was raised among the deer and the rishis, unaware of his royal father. He once held the cubs of a lion while it watched helpless — a childhood sign of the strength that would make him an emperor.
When Dushyanta, freed from the curse, found his son, he recognised him at once — the boy bore the chakravartin's marks, the signs of a world-conqueror. Bharata was taken to Hastinapura and trained in every art of kingship.
He conquered far beyond his fathers' borders, performing the great horse sacrifice — the Ashwamedha — as a world emperor. Tradition holds that his vast, just realm was named Bharatavarsha after him, and the name endures: modern Bhārat is still called Bharat.
