The Story
Bali, grandson of Prahlada, conquered the three worlds through his own valour and ruled with such justice that prosperity overflowed and even the gods envied his people's happiness. His generosity was his signature: no one left his court empty-handed.
The gods, displaced, sent Vishnu as Vamana, the dwarf, who asked Bali for land measuring three steps. His guru warned him against the disguised god, but Bali answered: even if the giver is Vishnu himself, a promise once made must be kept. He granted the three steps.
Vamana grew to cosmic size — one step covered the earth, the second the heavens. For the third, Bali bowed and offered his own head. Vishnu set his foot upon it and, pleased, granted the emperor the netherworld to rule and a yearly return to the land of men — the visit Kerala celebrates every Onam with carpets of flowers.

Mahabali is Kerala's beloved king — Onam, his homecoming festival, is the state's grandest celebration of flowers, boats, and feasts. His story teaches that the strength of a ruler is measured not by conquest but by keeping his word.
