The Story
Born in Balligavi, Allama Prabhu was a temple-drummer in his youth, known as the beautiful Allama, who lost his beloved wife and, in his grief, wandered seeking truth until he met the yogi Animisha, who gave him the experience of the Linga — the divine — and transformed him into the mystic he became.
He came to Kalyana, the capital of Basava's movement, and there he became the president of the Anubhava Mantapa — the assembly where the sharanas of the age met to discuss the deepest questions of the soul. His vachanas, the 'prabhudeva' sayings, cut through all pretence to the heart of spiritual truth.
His vachanas are among the most profound in the Kannada language — poems of fire and insight that reject ritual, caste, and book-learning in favour of the direct experience of God. He is counted as the very head of the Veerashaiva tradition, the guru of the gurus of the movement.
